British Values and Diversity

Promoting British Values and Celebrating Diversity at Broadheath

At Broadheath, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment, in line with British values of respect, tolerance, and mutual understanding. We believe that celebrating the variety of cultures, languages, and traditions represented in our community enriches our pupils’ educational experience and helps build a more compassionate and cohesive society.

The Curriculum

We ensure our curriculum reflects and celebrates the cultural diversity of our school population. Our goal is to create an inclusive environment where all pupils feel recognised and valued, and where their diverse backgrounds enhance the learning experience for everyone. For example, in history, we incorporate a wide range of cultural perspectives, such as teaching about the Shang Dynasty in China, highlighting its contributions to early civilisation, and exploring its lasting influence on Chinese culture. In English, we include texts from authors of various cultures, enabling children to engage with stories that reflect both their own experiences and those of others. We believe this not only fosters understanding and respect but also ensures the curriculum is relevant and meaningful to all students.

Multilingual Books in Every Class

Each classroom is equipped with a selection of multilingual books, reflecting the diverse languages spoken by our pupils and their families. These books are a valuable resource, helping pupils feel represented and engaged in their learning. Whether it’s dual-language storybooks or texts in multiple languages, they provide an opportunity for all pupils to explore different cultures while also developing their literacy skills. In addition, our school library offers a wide selection of books featuring diverse authors and characters, promoting inclusivity and representation.

Prayers from All Religions in Assembly

We recognise the importance of faith in many of our pupils’ lives and ensure that assemblies include prayers and reflections from a variety of religions. This approach nurtures respect for all beliefs and encourages understanding of different faith traditions. By creating a space for all pupils to feel included, we teach the value of tolerance and the importance of living harmoniously in a multicultural society.

Language of the Term

Each term, we celebrate a different language spoken within our school community. “Language of the Term” involves classroom activities, cultural lessons, displays and assemblies that help pupils explore the language and the culture it represents. From greetings to songs, we aim to broaden pupils’ understanding of the many linguistic backgrounds present in the school.

Teapot Talks

To strengthen relationships between school and home, we host regular “Teapot Talks”, informal gatherings where parents and staff can come together to discuss topics of interest over a cup of tea. These meetings provide a welcoming space to share cultural experiences, exchange ideas, and build a stronger, more inclusive community. It’s a wonderful way for everyone to connect and contribute to the life of the school. Additionally, both our school website and Class Dojo can be translated into multiple languages to ensure accessibility for all families.

Parents Supporting Learning

We actively encourage parents to take part in the learning process, and many contribute by sharing their own linguistic and cultural knowledge. For example, parents who speak Cantonese, Arabic, or other languages are invited to visit classrooms to teach pupils some basic phrases and cultural traditions. This not only helps children broaden their language skills but also nurtures an appreciation for the cultural diversity of their peers.

Bilingual and Multilingual Staff

Our staff includes bilingual and multilingual members who play a crucial role in creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment. They help bridge communication gaps, provide additional language support to pupils and families, and act as role models for the value of multilingualism. Their presence reinforces our commitment to ensuring every child, regardless of language background, feels understood and valued.

Welcoming new arrivals

We are proud to have a school community which holds a wealth of knowledge and a diverse cultural outlook. We welcome learners from all over the world who join our school community and add to the diversity already embedded. We are committed to the families we serve, providing support and encouragement from the day they arrive. Children are buddied up with a member of their class to ensure they feel welcome, happy and safe. They are supported with additional interventions to enrich their learning and build a foundation of knowledge to become life-long learners. Staff are on hand offering a welcoming atmosphere which creates a sense of belonging amongst our families. We believe that a happy child is a successful one, and at Broadheath we strive to ensure all our children are happy, safe and always learning.

At Broadheath we are working towards achieving The EAL Excellence Award.

We are proud to celebrate the rich diversity of our school community while upholding the core British values that guide our teaching and interactions. By promoting respect, tolerance, and mutual understanding, we prepare our pupils to thrive in a diverse and interconnected world.
